چکیده

We propose a laser induced fluorescence heterodyne approach to resolve the timedependent ion velocity distribution (IVDF) in a Hall thruster. This approach is motivated by studies of low frequency modes of oscillations in Hall thruster, including azimuthal or so-called spoke and axial or so-called breathing oscillations. In this paper, we present the first successful application of this method to an axial mode, by driving coherent breathing oscillations.

Time-resolved ion velocity distribution in a cylindrical Hall thruster: heterodyne-based experiment and modeling.

Time-resolved variations of the ion velocity distribution function (IVDF) are measured in the cylindrical Hall thruster using a novel heterodyne method based on the laser-induced fluorescence technique. This method consists in inducing modulations of the discharge plasma at frequencies that enable the coupling to the breathing mode. Using a harmonic decomposition of the IVDF, one can extract ea...

Time-Synchronized Continuous Wave Laser Induced Fluorescence Velocity Measurements of a 600 Watt Hall Thruster

A time-synchronized continuous wave laser induced fluorescence diagnostic technique based on a sample hold scheme is applied to xenon ion velocimetry of a BHT-600 Hall thruster plume. This method is capable of correlating measured fluorescence excitation lineshapes with current fluctuations in a plasma discharge and is tolerant of natural drifting in the current oscillation frequency. This pape...

Wave-particle interactions in electron acoustic waves in pure ion plasmas.

Electron acoustic waves (EAW) with a phase velocity less than twice the plasma thermal velocity are observed on pure ion plasma columns. At low excitation amplitudes, the EAW frequencies agree with theory, but at moderate excitation the EAW is more frequency variable than typical Langmuir waves, and at large excitations resonance is observed over a broad range. Laser induced fluorescence measur...

2-dimensional ion velocity distributions measured by laser-induced fluorescence above a radio-frequency biased silicon wafer

The dynamics of ions traversing sheaths in low temperature plasmas are important to the formation of the ion energy distribution incident onto surfaces during microelectronics fabrication. Ion dynamics have been measured using laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) in the sheath above a 30 cm diameter, 2.2 MHz-biased silicon wafer in a commercial inductively coupled plasma processing reactor. The vel...

Laser induced fluorescence measurements of axial velocity, velocity shear, and parallel ion temperature profiles during the route to plasma turbulence in a linear magnetized plasma device.

We report experimental measurements of the axial plasma flow and the parallel ion temperature in a magnetized linear plasma device. We used laser induced fluorescence to measure Doppler resolved ion velocity distribution functions in argon plasma to obtain spatially resolved axial velocities and parallel ion temperatures. We also show changes in the parallel velocity profiles during the transit...
